Design Standards

Creating great products on SWRM is easy, and it all starts with your designs which is why we recommend the following for optimal printing.  Please note the size of the garment sometimes requires adjustments and we will do the absolute best we can to accommodate your designs.

Recommended Software

We recommend choosing a software that supports the CMYK color profile such as Adobe Photoshop (Paid, CMYK feature built in), Adobe Illustrator (Paid, CMYK feature built in) and GIMP (Free, requires CMYK plugin).

File Type

SWRM supports high res images in PNG, Adobe Photoshop (PS) Adobe Illustrator.  Uploading in PNG format is best because it allows for transparent backgrounds and their small size makes for quicker uploads.

We highly recommend using PNG images (which accurately depict transparency) because we print the file you send us exactly as is. If there is a white or black background in your image, we will print that background onto the black or white garment. Please keep this mind when designing your clothes!

These formats will produce great quality products as long as the resolution meets or exceeds our recommendations. We support full transparency for PNG, PDF and AI files. This can be especially useful if you are creating a design with multiple overlapping images such as borders to go around your design, or shapes with non-rectangular edges. For PDF and AI formats, we support vector output for most of our products.

PNG

  • PNG is a completely lossless compression format.
  • Most graphic design programs (e.g. Photoshop) can create PNG images.
  • The PNG format includes full transparency support.

PDF and Adobe Illustrator (AI)

  • PDF and AI formats support both raster and vector graphic information and full alpha transparency.
  • PDF is a cross-platform open-standard and can be created from many digital design applications.
  • These are compact, high-quality image file formats.
  • We accept embedded fonts in PDF files.
  • If you upload a multiple page PDF, only the first page will appear on your product.  For products with multiple design areas (such as front and back), you will need to upload separate PDF files.

Design Quality

Higher resolutions will have even better results which is why we recommend no less than 300 DPI

Color Profiles

The CMYK color profile works best for print while sRGB works best for viewing designs on the web.

We also recommend choosing a software that supports the CMYK color profile such as Adobe Photoshop (Paid, CMYK feature built in), Adobe Illustrator (Paid, CMYK feature built in) and GIMP (Free, requires CMYK plugin).

Transparent Backgrounds

One of the best features of designing in the PNG format is that you can utilize transparent backgrounds. This means you can have the color of the fabric appear through the image.

A Note About Using Images with the Color White

In an image, there are areas that you may want to be transparent (i.e. the area or background behind it shows through) or areas that you may want to be non-transparent.

If you create PNG images with transparency, then those transparency settings will work. In photos, we would guess that no area should be transparent.

Using Halftones and Gradients

Halftones and gradients in shirt printing are made by the printers spraying down layers of ink onto the shirt. On dark shirts, the printers put down a base layer white first which sits underneath the colored layers, so the printers are effectively trying to lay down two layers over the exact same spot. *note that we will print a white layer under every design, regardless of garment color.

  • 15"x16" for front and back printing
  • 4"x16" for sleeves

Long Sleeve Shirts/Hoodies:

  • 1" border on each side required.
  • 15"x16" for front and back printing
  • 15" width printing, but 13" is usually better.
